Bamboo Import Europe

Pim van der Eng and Sandra Bonne somewhat accidentally ventured into the bamboo trade and grew their business into the largest bamboo supplier in Europe. Rembrandt Mergers & Acquisitions guided the sale of their company. "We have handed over our business with peace of mind."

Pim: "The story of Bamboo Import Europe begins in 2010... in our backyard. My wife Sandra and I wanted to build a garden house from bamboo poles. However, there was one problem: bamboo poles were almost impossible to find online. Fortunately, I eventually found a nice batch through a company that imports dried fruit from Indonesia.

I decided to resell the approximately one huldred poles I had left. To my surprise, they were gone quickly. Soon, I realized that the demand for bamboo was quite high; it grows fast, it is sustainable, and once it has hardened, it is extremely strong and can be used excellently as building material.

Were we ready to sell the business?

I bought another batch and slowly the contours of a new business emerged, alongside my existing groundworks company. Eventually, Sandra and I decided to change course and fully commit to the bamboo trade. We found reliable suppliers in Indonesia and China, and gradually expanded our range: from only bamboo poles to bamboo fences, blinds, cladding – you name it. At our peak, we were the largest importer and seller of bamboo (products) in the European Union, with seventeen sales points in Europe.

At that moment, an entrepreneur approached us who focuses on bamboo planting. Were we ready to sell the business? The conversations didn't lead to anything, but it got us thinking: wouldn't it be a good idea to sell the company, especially considering the increasingly expensive container shipping? Together with co-shareholder Stéphane Schröder, we decided to put our company up for sale."

Rembrandt helped us tremendously

Through our account manager at Rabobank, we got in touch with Rembrandt. Together, we found, after an extensive selection round, a suitable buyer: investment company 5square, along with Casper de Nooijer and the Van Beuningen family. We clicked with these parties immediately. They had the same vision for the future of the company and proposed a similar approach to customers and suppliers.

And perhaps the most pleasant thing: during negotiations, Rembrandt forms a welcome buffer between you and the other party.

Rembrandt has helped us tremendously with all this. They have a clear view of what information you need to provide and are incredibly quick in answering questions; at any time of the day and even during weekends if necessary. Very convenient when you have a pressing question.

And perhaps the most pleasant thing: during negotiations, Rembrandt forms a welcome buffer between you and the other party. They remain calm at all times, know exactly what you should and shouldn't say, and take the hits when friction arises. This helps you maintain a good relationship and allows you to hand over the company with peace of mind and in good harmony. Just as we have done now."
